But you said that you have recently moved here, so maybe the icing sugar was finer where you used to live. I have only ever lived in the UK, and only ever made buttercream using icing sugar bought here and don't find it gritty at all.

Try whizzing the sugar in a food processor before you use it.

I buy whichever is cheapest and i've never noticed a difference between them

You do need to make sure you mix it for ages. You may be doing this already, but I whip the butter for probably more than 7 minutes before adding the sugar, then it gets maybe another 5. It seems a really long time for something as basic as icing, but means it is white and fluffy and smooth.

I use cheapest icing sugar I find ... usually Aldi .... I’ve never noticed a difference between brands of icing sugar. Surely there can’t be?

I know what you mean about silver spoon., I used the ALDI version recently and it was the best buttercream I’d ever made!

Love your cake, OP!

I know this is an old thread but yes silver spoon icing sugar is a bit more grainy than Tate & Lyle. I find my buttercream is a little less sweet and smoother with Tate & lyle icing sugar.
