Treacle toffee recipe?

My mum doesn't really do sweets or cakes etc but for as long as I can remember she's loved Thornton's treacle toffee . Not the regular special toffee, the treacle one.

DS1 (16yo) went into town to buy some for Grandma's Christmas present yesterday only to find our branch of Thorntons has closed down. I know you can often get Thorntons things in supermarkets these days (and yes it's not what it was) but I've never seen the Treacle toffee.

Anyway, he has decided he's going to make her some treacle toffee. Does anyone have a recipe?

I may be too late but just in case he's at a loose end over the weekend....

8 oz demerara sugar
8 oz black treacle
4 oz butter

Melt butter and add treacle and sugar. Heat gently until sugar has dissolved, then simmer very gently 30 mins. that's it! BUT you have to test the stage it's at to make sure you get the proper toffee consistency at the end: 140 deg C on a sugar thermometer, or when you drop a little into a saucer of cold water and it separates into hard threads). Pour into a buttered shallow tin and mark into squares when almost set. Break into pieces when cold and wrap in greaseproof paper; store in an airtight tin.

Hope you like the imperial measures! Comes from an old book but I'm sure you know 25g =1 oz.

I hope he gives it a try!

I use this recipe for all toffee/caramels, there are options for tweaks and you can definitely put treacle in; I often do.

I recommend a sugar thermometer though to make sure you get the right chewy/hard set you want. They're not expensive and worth having for it.

That sounds perfect Pretty. I always made "bonfire" toffee for Guy Fawkes Night with mum as a child, but it seemed wrong to ask her for the recipe! That sounds very similar. We did the saucer of water thing.
