Only savoury stuff, soups, whole chicken, corn beef hash, ham hock, chilli, stuff like that,

but my slow cooker 24 years old so has two settings, low or high Smile

I have a friend who does rice pudding and all sorts of stuff but hers is a modern all singing dancing cooker.

oh duplicate post apologies,

Mostly joints of meat, poached whole chicken is really nice and pork shoulder for pulled pork. I keep meaning to try a steamed sponge pudding but haven't got round to it yet.

Gammeldragz · 20/12/2017 18:25

Whole chicken, pulled pork. Sometimes cook a bolognese/chili in the morning and leave it in the slowcooker.
Nothing adventurous, so watching with interest.

How do you cook a whole joint in one?
I have a slow cooker but don’t use it as I never know what to cook.
Is it safe to leave on all day?

ProfYaffle · 20/12/2017 18:32

Literally just stick the meat in and switch it on. I'll add liquid if I want it for a sauce/stock. eg I'll put a carton of passatta in with pork then I'll shred the pork and add it back to the passatta/meat juice to make a sauce. with the chicken I'll add water to about half way up, it makes really nice stock especially if you chuck in some onions, garlic, peppercorns and dried mushrooms.

Yes, it's safe to leave on all day - that's the point really!

Spag bol
Chilli
Sausage and bean casserole
Sweet and sour chicken
Curry
Cinnamon rolls
Probably some other stuff that I've forgotten about

This is the steamed sponge pudding I want to try (scroll down to the tip at the bottom)

How long and at low or high?
Would it take to cook a chicken please

lovelyjubilly · 20/12/2017 21:02

Mine love this
I brown the chorizo in a frying pan first, followed by the sausages, then chuck everything in the slow cooker for 8 hours on low.
Serve with crusty bread and salad.

ProfYaffle · 21/12/2017 09:23

At a rough guess, low 6 hrs and high 4. Obviously depends on the size of the chicken, how much stock you put in and what your cooker's like. That's the beauty of a slow cooker though, the timings don't have to be exact. I just stick the meat in on low after breakfast and it'll be ready for an afternoon roast.
