how do you know if sea food is off?

I had bought some octopi for tonight and when I opened the bag there was a slight fishy smell - I know it is only supposed to smell of the sea - then when my son came in he said the smell made him feel a bit sick. I shouldn't risk it should I?

Shall I complain? Bought yesterday from reliable fish market. Kept in fridge.

I don't know about octopi but squid always smell very fishy, and are still fine to eat like that.

If it smells of fish, it is ok. If you open the bag and you think "OH MY GOD WHAT DIED IN HERE!!!!" it's off.

If you just think "ooh, that's a very fishy smell" then it is ok.

Be fine.
Rinse it and cook it.

Lots of seafood is not spankingly fresh (ie straight out of the sea) thus sometimes smells fishy.
Doesn't mean its off though.

wow! really quick - thanks I will give it a good rinse and then cook it and taste it myself. I didn't realise it could smell so fishy and be alright.

(just hope I don't spend all night throwing up!)
