Ready made custard - can I add mascarpone and heat it up?

I have some ready made custard and I want to make it a bit more luxurious. Is it OK to add mascarpone to it before heating it?

BBC good food have a recipe for trifle which uses ready made custard thickened with mascarpone... but, if I heat it, will it die?
