You can in a Pyrex bowl. You might want to google for timings though. I seem to remember that a slightly lower temperature for a longer time works.

I didn't bother lining it. Just us butter.
I've baked a cake in a metal-handled saucepan too, when I didn't have a big enough tin. That did need lining.

You can bake a cake in anything heatproof. I misjudged the quantity I’d need to fill my Christmas cake tin and had some mix left over which I baked in a spaghetti tin. It was fun serving up perfectly round little slices of fruit cake!
