Birthday cake help - how big a tin and what recipe and general help for the clueless

I am baking a cake for DS' third birthday tomorrow and I am panicking a little.

I want to make a digger cake a bit like the attached. I have plastic diggers and a 10" square cake tin but I am worried that this may be too big. Will it take hours to cool? I have tomorrow but it needs to be complete by mid afternoon so I am a bit mindful of timing. I could nip out today and buy a smaller tin or I have 6" and 8" round tins but I though square would be easier to decorate.

Also if anyone has a good recipe for a chocolate cake that would be appreciated!
