OMG - just commited one of "my" cardinal sins when cooking dinner.........

went to Morrisons today to buy "something" to go with the mince I'd got out of the freezer for tonight. Was going to make my own Spag Bol (as per usual) with fresh vegetables and tinned tomatoes.......but was feeling so tired I skipped the veg aisle completely and went and bought a jar of Bolognaise (sp) Sauce - and used that with the mince tonight without adding anything to it!

One of the things I've always sworn I would never do when cooking was to 'cheat' on something as simple as Spag Bol and buy a jar of sauce ! Feel I must now go and give a confession (except I'm CofE) so decided to 'fess up on here/

fannyannie ~ I would hate you to come to my house. I use jars for things like that a lot

Cappuccino · 12/04/2007 20:44

did you use the 10 minute spaghetti or that microwavy stuff?

if the former you're in teh clear

misdee · 12/04/2007 20:44

not such a big deal really.

Iota · 12/04/2007 20:45

did it taste good? that's the important thing

Iota · 12/04/2007 20:45

and next time buy Seeds of Change organic sauce - and console yourself that there's no nasty additives in it

Beauregard · 12/04/2007 20:47

Call that a cooking sin?
no hope for me then.

Carmenere · 12/04/2007 20:47

Omg! 10 Hail Marys and a donation to Borough Market Posh Food Fund immediately

for your penance you must...

eat jar bolognese

ChelseaDagger · 12/04/2007 20:48

I think Dolmio tastes better than anyone's home made bolognese sauce anyway. It's one of the only jars that I buy.

fannyannie · 12/04/2007 20:49

oh it was proper spaghetti - organic stuff too. It was quite nice actually - and the boys loved it.....

I alway make spag bol & lasagne from scratch, but we went to friends for dinner once and she had made lasagne and my dh said to her 'This is lovely xx, you must tell xx who you made it!' IT WAS FROM A JAR!!!! I now refuse to make lasagne for him - if he wants it - he can go to her house!

stitch · 12/04/2007 20:51

errr.... by using tinned tomatos you are already breking plenty of rules.
what s wrong with fresh tomatos?

bolognese sauce in a jar is imo far better than tinned tomatos. actually, everythng is better than tinned veg.

ChelseaDagger · 12/04/2007 20:53

Really stitch? Where's Moondog when you need her? If she says that tinned tomatoes are ok then I'm happy to buy them.

Greenleeves · 12/04/2007 20:55

Stitch, wot are you on about? Tinned tomatoes are fine.

colditz · 12/04/2007 20:55

Why, what's wrong with tinned tomatoes?

Trinityrhino · 12/04/2007 20:57

tinned tomatoes are lush with a fry up and perfectly fine to use in spag bol and ohter things, I alwasy thought.....tinned carrots on the other hand are minging

fannyannie · 12/04/2007 20:57

what wrong with tinned tomatoes???

They're a lot cheaper than the amount of fresh tomatoes I'd have to use to make enough sauce for my lot and besides I'm nearly 33 weeks pg - I haven't got the energy to be skinning that many tomatoes - as DH won't eat the skin

I must start a thread about what other people put in a bolognese sauce. Mine is very disappointing.

stitch · 12/04/2007 21:01

well, I think tinned tomatos are minging. disgusting etc etc etc.
i never ever skin tomatos. why? the skinadds lots of flavour.

im the queen of jar sauces etc, but when i do cook food properly, i stay away, far far awy from tinned tomatos.

stitch · 12/04/2007 21:02

o, and any food cooked by anyone else is delicious imo. (when offered to me)

fannyannie · 12/04/2007 21:05

there's one brand of 'expensive' tomatoes which ARE minging but there's nothing wrong with the ones I use -and DH doesn't like the skin cooked - pure and simple - one of the very few things he really doesnt' like.

Carmenere · 12/04/2007 21:06

I think I can step into moondogs shoes for this one. Tinned tomatoes have more flavour and vitamins than the fresh ones we get for the very reason that they are tinned soon after picking and they are picked when they are naturally ready because this is the cheapest time to produce tomatoes. Some tinned tomatoes are GM but very rarely over here.

ChelseaDagger · 12/04/2007 21:09

Thanks Carmenere. I don't know why I asked really because I still would have bought them regardless. Just thought I'd maybe misunderstood big-time.
