Lamb -3 days past 'use by'

Would you use it if it smelled ok? Have been unable to get the dried chickpeas to make Jamie’s slow cooked lamb. Finally found them today, got all my bits together for cooking tomorrow & realise the lamb (vacuum packed Tesco) is ‘use by’ 2 days ago. 😖 If it smelled ok, would you go ahead?

It will be absolutely fine - especially if it's slow cooked through. Use by dates are for guidance only. So much perfectly good food gets wasted because of them. If it smells fine it would be a waste of perfectly good lamb to bin it!

Yes, particularly for a slow cooked (thoroughly) dish such as the one you have in mind (I might not risk it with a rare steak for example!).

If you’re serving to little ones or other ‘vulnerable’ groups then use your instinct and judgement after cooking as to whether safe or not. I’d wager that an average healthy adult would be fine with the dish you are planning.

I tend to agree with Biscay that way too much food is wasted due to over cautiousness about best before and also use by dates.
