Giant cupcake cake smash

Hi all,

I have my sons cake smash this Sunday (8th). I have practiced his cake once and it wasn't too bad. I've got the right recipe and cooked well last time.

However I've just done another practice run just to be sure and it seems worse than last time (exact same recipe). I am putting the oven on 160c and on my oven I have a setting that's apparently good for cakes (the picture for it looks like just 2 lines 1 above the other, whereas the normal fan oven has a fan in the middle). I'm wondering if I should just cook it using the ordinary fan oven setting as I've found this time that the sides are cooking long before the middle.

Doesn't anyone have any words of wisdom. I know it will be smashed up but I can't take a cake this is raw in the middle. I feel I have a good recipe so I'm prepared to stick with it.

I'm cooking the bottom first and covering with foil around 20 minutes in so the top doesn't burn and takes around an hour and pretty much the same for the top.

No I didn't have a gender reveal party. We didn't know we was having a boy until he was born (#insertmiddlefingerhere).

Well I would like to make the cake, if you like to be creative then why not do it for yourself. It's a bit of an accomplishment when you do it yourself also!

You can say that all you want @Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar Wink

Why would cake go to waste? As long as the floor (which is usually covered) and child is clean why can't you eat the leftovers?

Not sure why people are judging anyway, OP just wanted advice on how to make a cake, she didn't want advice on wether it was ok to smash a cake.

PandaEyes2 · 03/10/2017 17:36

Maybe it's an issue to you @PoppyPopcorn I'll do whatever I like thanks. What you going to do about it?... that's right nothing and nothing will change my mind so was there any point causing an argument about it?

OP posts:
PandaEyes2 · 03/10/2017 17:38

@Lovemusic33 Thank you! I'm paying and buying all my own ingredients, it's not being funded by anyone else or god forbid the government! So if I want to make a cake and throw it all over the house or in a photography studio I will!

PandaEyes2 · 03/10/2017 17:39

Oh and FYI they aren't going to waste... they're serving their purpose aren't they?!

OP posts:
CandyMelts · 03/10/2017 17:39

Jeez I go to cake factories for work, one wasted cake is nothing. You enjoy OP, I'm as middle class as they come and think they're lovely.

PoppyPopcorn · 03/10/2017 17:45

jeez I go to cake factories for work, one wasted cake is nothing

The difference is that cake factories aren't deliberately wasting cake so that they can post pictures with #makingmemories #lilman #gawjuss on social media sites.

Fekko · 03/10/2017 17:46

How do I get a job visiting cake factories?

PandaEyes2 · 03/10/2017 17:46

Who said they're going on social media sites and that I'm even part of social media?

OP posts:
PandaEyes2 · 03/10/2017 17:46

@PoppyPopcorn its not wastage if it's serving a purpose surely Wink

OP posts:
PandaEyes2 · 03/10/2017 17:47

Or do you make the rules because you deem it tacky and unacceptable?

OP posts:
CandyMelts · 03/10/2017 17:48

@fekko food science degree Grin

Fekko · 03/10/2017 17:49

Oooooh. Does it put you off cake though? I've known people who have gone into jam factories and meat processing plants and have gone right off the food.

HateSummer · 03/10/2017 17:52

I think it's sticking your middle finger up at poor families living hand to mouth. It's the consumerist surreal shitty world we're living in at the moment. Horrible.
And making it sound like its a normal celebration is bizarre. I think a majority of normal people wouldn't dream of doing something so crass. Another shitty thing inherited from across the Atlantic.

CandyMelts · 03/10/2017 17:55

@fekko it does sadly, my desk looks like a bakery and it doesn't even register as a treat. Can't imagine going off jam though, I'd have thought the factories would smell amazing!

PandaEyes2 · 03/10/2017 17:55

@HateSummer I've never once stuck my middle finger at families who can't afford and living in poverty! Now why don't you all go pick on other families that have celebrated their child's birthday in this way! It's my son and my money so I'll do as I please. I'm not asking for donations to fund it am I?

OP posts:
PandaEyes2 · 03/10/2017 17:56

Funny, I must know a lot of un-normal people 🤔

Cake smash parties are just awful. So vulgar.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 03/10/2017 18:01

I have genuinely never heard of a cake smash.

Does it mean that the small child messes about with the cake while you take pics or do you smash it for them, or is it a group activity like a piñata?

I saw the pic upthread but that looks staged?

I don't like the idea messing with food, even at school I thought food fights were wrong in lots of ways.

ToneDeafHamster · 03/10/2017 18:02

I really don’t know why people lose their heads over cake smashes. They come across as breathtakingly sanctimonious. Its a fucking cake.

Can’t answer your question OP as I am a useless baker. I bought my giant cupcake for my DD’s cake smash. It was great.

PandaEyes2 · 03/10/2017 18:03

For goodness sake... it's cake! Are we not all grown ups here? Get off your moral high horses and back off if you don't like it!

QueenBeex · 03/10/2017 18:09

I can honestly say I've never heard of a cake smash Blush

JustAboutHangingInThere · 03/10/2017 18:14

I would like to visit the cake factory with Fekko and CandyMelts

Please Smile

PoppyPopcorn · 03/10/2017 18:14

Bills - of course it's staged. That's the whole point.

Tinksee · 03/10/2017 19:08

What I meant by my mother’s comments (when I was little) about “starving children in Africa” is that leaving food on a plate isn’t going to affect poverty in the Third World any more than a cake smash.

In other words, I was sticking up for the OP, not piling on the abuse.
