Cheapest way to make Beef Wellington for first time

SippingSipsmith · 26/09/2017 16:53

I saw John Torode make one on This Morning last week. Love cooking but never tried making one and it looked so easy! Thought I could make it for my DB and SIL before rolling out for a dinner party.

Is there a cheap place to get a fillet of beef? Usual Ocado is about £70 which is a lot anyway but especially as not made it before and could end in disaster.

Is there a go-to supermarket for this or one that has it on offer a lot? Or an online butcher? Thanks

Do individual beef wellingtons (search for recipe). And yes, you can get fillet steak a lot cheaper if you don't shop at Ocado. The point of beef wellington is that it's a luxe, expensive dish though.

It would be nice with pork fillet maybe?

OpposableThumbs2 · 26/09/2017 16:59

I would get it from a butcher. You need to see that it isn't tapered otherwise it will cook unevenly. Also, you don't need as much as you think you will.

Start with the little individual ones.

I just got Nadiya's Kitchen (Sigh. says DH. We have NO cookbooks do we says DH). She has mini beef wellington sausage rolls with beef sausage and mushrooms. And some flavouring that I don't like eww mustard.

I am actually going to try them with pork sausagemeat but maybe will try beef sausage next time.

Thanks for ideas everyone. Really wanted to have a go at doing a whole one but maybe individual is the way to go. If I find any need fillet deals I'll repost!

Aldi for individual fillet steaks. £5 each.

If you can get access to a cash and carry, eg booker/major/batleys, whole fillets are significantly cheaper there.
