Chickpeas turned brown?

I made the BBC good food pumpkin and chickpea curry this morning and turned off the stove and covered as I had to go out for 30 mins. I've just come back and the curry has really darkened (Thai yellow curry paste and coconut milk) and the chickpeas have turned brown. Has anyone ever had this happen before with chickpeas and are they safe to eat? It doesn't look the most appetising tbh, which is a shame as normally I love this curry.

How strange! I have made that recipe loads of times but I have never had this problem. I wouldn't eat that TBH. Could it have burnt, or could any of the ingredients be off?

I don't think so, unless it was the chickpeas themselves (tinned from Tesco). There's nothing stuck to the bottom of the pan and it was on a low heat. How annoying!
