we're arranging a "1980s" style dinner to celebrate this year's eurovision with friends. so far we've decided on dessert - a choice of black forest gateaux and arctic roll. ideas for starter and main - breaded garlic mushrooms and chicken kiev - although fairly similar. can't serve seafood so prawn cocktail is out. any iideas gratefully received. also alcoholic drinks - no blue nun or liebfraumilch please.......

I think Lasagne was very popular in the 80's, people really started to get into their pasta then.
I agree with the fanned Avacado, with a tomato coulis type thing aroud it.
I think Syllabub (sp) in a cocktail glass or wine glass would also fit the bill. Probably a chocolatety one. That menu may not be nouvealle cuisine like you would have got in a resturant, but is the kind of thing that would have been served up for friends at a dinner party.
I imagnine that New world wines were not so popular, so go with a french one. You could serve Tequilla sunrise for pre dinner drinks. Also Irish coffee was very popular.
Hope it goes well

There's a Fascinating Aida song about yuppies including the lines

'The stigma of fruit salad lessens somewhat
When served with mango, kiwifruit and kumquat'

and 'To start the meal there's tabbouleh
Taramasalata's so passe'

and 'If you serve celeriac
You're sure to be invited back'

HTH!

The French adore Le Piat D'Or or there's always Mateus Rose.

sundried tomatoes!!!

Cajun blackened everything! (fish, chicken etc etc) I worked in a 'novelty' Cajun themed restaurant which was jammed every night with people handing over fistfuls of cash for burned fish...

Quiche..trust me, ask your parents, there was even a crappy book called Real Men Don't Eat Quiche. And your parents will pronounce it 'Kwitch' to be amusing. There were lots of salad bars serving Quiche and salad.

Tiramsu foir desert. Whch I still hate...

filthymindedvixen · 03/04/2007 18:30

and you must serve Gold Blend coffee after dessert....

Babycham or Lambrusco!

old fashioned salad (boiled egg, slice cucumber, half a tomato, ham, leaf of lettuce, potato salad, beetroot, salad cream)

ladymariner · 04/04/2007 01:05

T-bone steak! Oh yum!
Spam fritters. (possibly not so yum)
Thunderbird (yum at the time, badly for approx 3 days after necking a bottle of it with mates cos it tasted like pop so absolutley not yum now in any way!)

ScottishThistle · 04/04/2007 01:13
