Amazingly tasty dairy free cake?!

Please help! I need to make a transportable birthday cake (so it won't be fancily decorated etc) for my sister in laws birthday. Her partner doesn't eat dairy. Everyone else does and loves a good chocolate fudge cake/any cake really. But I need to accommodate him and make something everyone else will enjoy. Including 5 small children so no 'bits' allowed! Can anyone help me with an awesome no fail recipe?!

Just replace the butter for vitalite or pure.

These are two dairy free (and gluten free) cakes I make regularly. I give them to people without and dietary requirements and have had good feedback! They always turn out really well and have a lovely moist texture.

If I was making a birthday cake I'd probably double the recipes to make two layers and add dairy free lemon curd to the first one and experiment with a vegan chocolate icing for the second.

As mentioned earlier just replace butter with a dairy free spread. I use Green and Blacks cocoa powder to give a rich chocolate flavour and if you have to avoid milk products altogether Kinnerton do a great dark chocolate for melting into a frosting or grating on top.

Thanks all. He can eat eggs. I'm happy to bake a cake without the dairy but thinking about it, it's the icing that worries me. Can you make a buttercream equivalent with a substitute? He's lactose intolerant rather than dairy (if that's different?!) so would a lacto free butter give the same taste and result?

Top a chocolate cake with fresh raspberries or strawberries and powder sugar - then you don't have to worry about frosting - sprinkle with edible glitter if you can get it

I don't understand? There are so many dairy free spreads in the supermarket that you just use instead of butter in both cake and icing.

How about a chocolate glacé icing?

Some of the dairy free spreads are a bit too thin for a buttercream but if you use the block of (dreaded) Stork, that's dairy free. As are most supermarket versions.

betty crocker chocolate fudge icing is dairy free and really tasty, way nicer than any i can make with dairy free spread.

I tend to use 2/3s stork (in the gold foil not the one in the tub) and 1/3 Pure sunflower spread. If you use just the Pure and overbeat it particularly on a warm day it tends to split.

Use pure soya spread and dark choc for frosting. I tried the sunflower one they do but doesn't make it thick enough. I did a dairy free wedding cake for my wedding or the other option is coconut cream I have seen people use and have wanted to try doing. I always use a water of my sugar as soft brown sugar in my choc cakes too makes them so tasty

Her thing is she replaces the butter in the cake with ground almonds, which have a similarly rich, silky texture.

The icing has dairy but I see other people have got ideas for that.

Huffletuff it's easy enough to bake with a substitute but icing is really obviously not butter and not pleasant (in my opinion) when made with marg. I didn't know about Betty Crocker being dairy free - that's a brill idea thanks. Thanks for all the others, never had to really think about it before
