I'm toying with the idea of making a cake for DPs surprise 30th celebration. He's a huge Star Wars fan and I noticed that I can get moulds shaped like the milenium falcon or BB8 etc.

My question is: how the flip do you decorate them? Is it possible to use foundant to ice them to get a smooth finish without losing the details from the mould?

They're tricky.

Look at this R2D2 cake....made from a mould and decorated with piped icing

I wouldn't try that unless I was very confident.

This would be simpler
