what do you need the stock for - is the chicken defrosted, because you can always use water and herbs, or a stock cube. What is the salt in???

melsy · 12/07/2004 23:10

The salts in the tub of chicken stock, I like a nice gravy, so its quite soupy. I wasnt thinking , the stock was actually for something else . I normally just add water and herbs and my won homemade veg stock. I dont know were my brain went.

melsy · 12/07/2004 23:11

Yes the chicken was defrosted.

could you imerse the tub in a sink filled with cold water. change the water quite often (it would get colder from the tub and what you need is slightly warmer temp. but not warm. does it make any sense?)until it's defrosted. alternatively, could you break the ice in samller pieces, put them in sealed plastic bags and put those in cold water until the ice melts. not sure if i understood correctly, but i take it you have a tub filled with frozen chicken stock (ice basically) which needs defrosting?? have you got any oxo stock cubes? could use those instead. hth

islandgirl · 12/07/2004 23:18

melsy - I'll try and guess what you are up to. If you cooking the chicken on a low heat, and have browned it first, simmer it for about an hour, and it will be ok to eat, and tender enough. If the stock is just for the gravy, can you use something else. Don't know if this is helping but keep posting while the pot boils!!

melsy · 12/07/2004 23:19

I was being impatient with the microwave taking ages to defrost it so I just chucked it in the pot half done and let the boilng liquid melt it .

Now I feel really bad as its for dd, but Im gonna eat it a little later , so if i get ill tonight then I wont give it to dd!!! Im just worried it may be breeding bacteria or something & I didnt look at the salt content till after . Dont stock cubes have loads of salt?????

GOD I SOUND NEUROTIC now. typing it out must make appear like a right loon

This won't help now (sorry) but you can buy low salt stock cubes in health food shops. I use them to make DS's stuff as I can't be bothered making stock (as I did for DS1!)

OldieMum · 12/07/2004 23:28

Stock cubes do contain quite a lot of salt. And partially defrosted chicken is potentially dangerous. I'd be more worried about the chicken than the salt to be honest. Sorry to be negative, but I wouldn't rely on whether you get ill as a test for whether it's OK for your dd.

islandgirl · 12/07/2004 23:28

I may be shot down for this but as a one off I'm sure a tiny bit of salt will be ok. now wait for the shooting down!!

melsy · 12/07/2004 23:34

Oldie mum the chicken was defrosted. It was the ready made bought stock that wasnt quite defrosted.

0.7g salt / o.4 sodium isnt a lot in a huge vat of chicken casserole is it ???????? Thanks for the suggestion Tommy.

OP posts:
melsy · 12/07/2004 23:35

and I never suggested that I use stcok cubes for dd.

islandgirl · 12/07/2004 23:39

melsy - I think you will be fine, as the chicken is the worrying thing. Go for it, as you don't know where I live, so I can just hide............

islandgirl · 12/07/2004 23:40

sorry - as the chicken is clearly not the worry as it was defrosted. Oh give me strengh....
