Many thanks.

Chop onions and garlic. Put in slow cooker with meat (dust meat and brown it briefly in a pan if you possibly can). Add in a bottle of ale, one beef stock cube, generous pinch of salt and pepper and a pinch of mustard powder or teaspoon of mustard if you have it. Leave to cook on low for as long as you need. Thicken sauce with cornflour before assembling the pie.

Bit late to the party but I swear by the Schwartz slow cooker sachets. Since I started using those, and sticking to the instructions, all my slow cooker meals have been spot on- including stales and ale stew.

Not late, common meal here as farmers wife. Guinea did yours last week, forgot to update, lovely. Thank you.

Blazed that's a good tip, I will also try that. Thank you. I use the cheese sauce mix for macaroni often if I can't be bothered to do from scratch and it is certainly the most popular version.

Also late to the party, but Felicity Cloake has a v good steak and ale pie recipe on the Guardian website. Normally my go-to. Nb, she uses beef shin, which imho is lovely when eaten freshly cooked but not otherwise.
