Graduation cake - how long can it stand at room temperature?

DD has a graduation coming up and I was thinking of making her a graduation cake - sponge filled with jam and buttercream and covered with sugar paste. However owing to the logistics of the event I need to make and decorate the cake in advance.

So how long can I leave a cake out in the kitchen or in a tin?

Covered in sugar paste in a proper cake box it'll be fine for days.

I'm a baker, for a Saturday wedding I'd bake and cool on Wednesday, fill, crumbcoat and fondant on Thursday then add decorations on Friday. Cake ready for Saturday and good until the following Wednesday x

Sorry some hectic days recently with graduation activities

Just wanted to thank you for the advice and help - we made the cake Wednesday, decorated it Thursday and ate it today and it was beautiful
