Icing in hot weather

Any tips for icing in this hot weather ?
I need to do DSs birthday cake, plan is buttercream crumb coat then roll out icing for covering and decoration. It's thankfully a fairly simple design (football pitch & players) but just worried about it just going gloopy.
Am supposed to be doing buttercream piping on Gingerbreadman to give them shirts too, worried they will just melt.
Going to do it tonight when it's cooler and thankfully kitchen is not too sweltering compared to everywhere else, but only have limited fridge space.
Anybody have any tips to reduce the swearing level when I attempt this this evening?

My daughter made a sponge cake today and put buttercream filling and it melted in the heat. Maybe put the cake in the fridge to get it really cold before you ice it then put it back in the fridge afterwards.
That's all I can think of. Hope it helps.
