Brownie question

Hi, just made chocolate brownies for first time. The recipe says to bake for 35-40 mins until gooey but not raw with crisp topping. I'm having trouble gauging gooey. Thinking back to brownies I have bought in shops, the centre has been softer but not a thick liquid. Does it have to be liquidy/gooey or will softer do? I'm worried about it being raw.

Gooey is fine, Liquidy is not. Last week I was at a Cookery School for a day and we put the cooked Brownies in the freezer well before they were fully cool to stop the middle from cooking too much.
