Tarragon or dill - which is more useful?

Hi,

I'm just planting some herbs. I've got space for one more herb in my planter. Would you choose tarragon or dill? Which do you use most? They're not herbs I use that often, so difficult to decide. Thought I'd canvas opinion here!

I already have chives, basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary, sage, mint and coriander.

Thanks!

Bay is most useful!

I like and use dill much more than tarragon. But dill is an annual or maybe biennial, so a bit more faff.
If you do get tarragon, get French not Russian - he taste is much nicer.

I would generally use dill with fish dishes and tarragon with chicken dishes. Which do you cook more?

Hulder · 21/04/2017 13:55

Personally I would say tarragon. Less faff.

Dill has a tendency to colonize your garden and if you grow fennel as well you will end up with hybrid fendill which isn't nice.

Tarragon. I use it a lot. It's also very good with mushrooms and essential for bearnaise sauce.

HomityBabbityPie · 21/04/2017 13:59

Tarragon because even the smell of dill makes me heave.

MiddleClassProblem · 21/04/2017 14:01

I'm not a dill fan either but love tarragon. I use it a fair bit with chicken but also do a white wine based sayce with it for seafood or fish and pasta

QuackDuckQuack · 21/04/2017 14:03

We use tarragon from our garden fairly frequently. We have never missed having dill.

n0ne · 21/04/2017 14:10

Tarragon is more versatile - goes with chicken, fish and beef. Dill only goes with fish.

MiladyThesaurus · 21/04/2017 14:12

I like dill more than tarragon, and use it with a lot more than fish.

Which do you use more?

TheSpottedZebra · 21/04/2017 14:31

I had no idea that tarragon was so popular. That, or this poll is RIGGED.

Freddy do you have bay?

toffeeboffin · 21/04/2017 14:32

Tarragon.

Dill is rank.

4merlyknownasSHD · 21/04/2017 14:45

Dill is delicious with fish. Period.
Tarragon is delicious with fish and really delicious with chicken. Go with Tarragon.

Freddyfredfred · 21/04/2017 14:54

I don't have bay, might have to look at that. I've got a big planter, but could have a couple of pots too. My mint is in its own pot, I had a mint plant once that spread a bit too much. Dill spreading everywhere doesn't sound great to me. I think it'll have to be tarragon. I probably cook more chicken than fish.

I use dill a lot. DS went through a Skandi phase so I shoved it in everything for a while. Nice in a stirfry.

Natsku · 21/04/2017 15:00

Tarragon, I cook chicken a lot so use it a lot. Dill is great for fish and new potatoes but not really for much else.

originalbiglymavis · 21/04/2017 15:05

No, you really can use it in lots of things!

Tatiebee · 21/04/2017 15:07

I use Tarragon quite a lot with chicken and pork.

originalbiglymavis · 21/04/2017 15:08

Rosemary? I like nice smelly things.

TheSpottedZebra · 21/04/2017 15:32

Dill is AMAZING!
So good with salads, potatoes, root veg - espcially beetroot.
Great in things like spanakopita -so all cooked greens really.
Good with eggs.

CheshireChat · 22/04/2017 18:01

Oregano! Could you grow that? Particularly nice with Greek food.

Otherwise tarragon, but I hate dill.

OnyK · 22/04/2017 20:51

I'd take the mint out and plant it in a separate pot, as it's very invasive. Then you'll have room for tarragon and dill. I would also squeeze an oregano in.

OnyK · 22/04/2017 20:51

Just saw your post about mint - ignore me!

Mupflup · 22/04/2017 20:52

Not helpful but tarragon is VILE. So I'm voting for dill.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 22/04/2017 20:52

Tarragon
