What do you serve with a gammon joint?

I have the in-laws coming to Sunday lunch this week and have bought a gammon joint to cook ('ooo I've not had that for a while I thought' as I dashed round Asda). However now I'm a bit stumped as to what to serve with it.

Do roast potatoes go? What about gravy? if so what sort of gravy?

Ideas please!

I did gammon last week with jacket potato, veg and red onion chutney. I usually serve it with parsley or cHesse sauce. It goes well with mash, new potatoes, baby corn, peas etc. If I serve gammon 'chops' ( ie. Not joint of gammon), I will put pineapple on it.

Hot gammon:
Parsley sauce, mashed potatoes, spring greens

Cold gammon:
Dauphinoise potatoes, green salad, dill and mustard sauce (gravadlax style)

Cold gammon:
Little baked red skin potatoes, green salad, home made red cabbage coleslaw, pickles and chutneys

braised red cabbage and potatoes with a mustard sauce.

We love gammon and I usually serve it with steamed spring greens and baked potatoes. It is always glazed and we use some of that to drizzle over the meat once it is sliced. Mmmmm might have to get one for dinner on sunday now. DD loves it with roast potatoes and peas so will do them for her.

It is also nice with cauliflower cheese or potato gratin or macaroni cheese (that is a nigella one) and we like it cold with gherkins and german mustard yum

Cauliflower cheese and mashed winter veg Grin

ouryve · 09/04/2015 23:03

If you boil it, leeks in a cheese sauce made with a bit of the boiling water in the sauce are delicious. Or cauliflower cheese. Plus a dirty great pile of other veg. In winter, I sometimes serve it with spiced red cabbage. Spuds are usually baked jacket taties, or boiled new potatoes or, often chunky chips, which are acceptable to at least one of the boys on any given day.

Sauted leeks in a cheese sauce, and beetoot are my favourite veg to go with gammon

HMF1 · 09/04/2015 23:30

It's one of the few times I will make Dauphinoise potatoes & I also like braised red cabbage. I think something creamy goes well with ham, I bought one today to use on Sunday, might have some broccoli instead of cabbage.

LittleBearPad · 09/04/2015 23:32

Sauté potatoes, cauliflower cheese, peas.

goestoshowyouthough · 10/04/2015 17:11

Roast potatoes, baby potatoes dressed in olive oil and parsley, crusty bread and salad (plus all the associated condiments) and some pineapple

damepeanutbutter · 11/05/2015 21:24

Put gammon joint in slow cooker.
Add a tin of pineapple pieces in juice.
Add a tablespoon of molasses or a stock cube if you haven't got molasses.
Cook on low for 8 hours.

Serve with potatoes (mashed or boiled) and any green veg. The pineapple juices and fruit make a lovely gravy.

HelenF350 · 11/05/2015 21:42

I cook my gammon in pineapple juice and muscavado sugar. I use some of the sauce as a 'gravy' and serve with mealie, carrots, cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes Grin

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 11/05/2015 21:49

Mashed potato, savoy cabbage or red cabbage done the German way and parsley sauce.

CaurnieBred · 11/05/2015 21:53

I serve boulangere potatoes (like dauphinois but made with stock instead of cream)

Seriouslyffs · 11/05/2015 22:10

Pease pudding and parsley sauce and steamed carrots.

Superlovely · 11/05/2015 22:11

Into a saucepan put about half a jar if cranberry sauce, a splash of orange juice and grate some fresh ginger, or add a small sprinkle of dried. Warm it through and put in a jug. Easy and v delicious with ham.

Stinkersmum · 11/05/2015 22:13

Mash, green veg and parsley sauce. Use the Bisto instant parsley sauce granules. Bloody lovely.

MissusThePoint · 11/05/2015 22:17

I serve gammon with either dauphinois, or cheesy filled jackets (back potatoes, empty contents, mix with egg, cheese, seasoning, fill in to jackets, remake for 20mins).

Plus, Delia's Christmas braised red cabbage recipe.

Maybe some Cumberland sauce.

Never gravy.

Yum!

MissusThePoint · 11/05/2015 22:19

Ooh, yes, cauli cheese.
