Cutting panna cotta?

Having people over for dinner and the easiest dessert to do is panna cotta (various dietary requirements). I need them to be a particular shape but can't find the right shape mould. So I wondered, if I make a "sheet" of it, it should work to cut them out and plate up, right?

Er I can think of multiple ways that could go wrong. Firstly is the shape complicated? Are you a good cutter outerer?

I have a biscuit cutter in the right shape! And I have a very reliable cake lifter to slide under the cut out pieces. I thought if I dipped the cutter in boiling water between each one it would be smoother...

Ok I thought you were going to cut them by hand and my inner perfectionist was having the collywobbles! Sounds good just make sure its set!

i'd have a trial run, I'd say for you to be able to cut it out it might well need more gelatine in it and be a bit bouncy

it's sort of the gelatin and the shape that works to hold it together and if you cut the surface it's not going to end well

Can you get more biscuit cutters and use them like moulds??

well , sounds difficult to me,.. . I reckon that no one will notice if dessert is the 'wrong shape', but they will notice if its just a pile of curds on a plate. ( i.e it didnt cut into shape and you were reduced to scapeing it up)

Why cant you just make it in glasses/ glass dishes?

Just buy some aluminium pudding basins. So much easier - you just sit the basin in hot water for a few seconds and they plop out really easily.

Tbf, they don't need to be a particular shape, but one of my friends just got her pilot's license so I wanted to have airplane desserts Smile but I neither want nor need 8 airplane biscuit cutters (and it would just pour out the bottom anyway!). I don't think I have 8 matching any things to use as identical moulds. Would fairy cake tins be too small?

I'm not sure there is enough 'hold' in an ordinary panna cotta recipe for it to be cut like that and it still hold it's shape like Tondelaya says.

What shape are you trying to achieve?

Oops sorry. Cross post. Definitely do something with decoration, even taking into account dietary requirements, that would be much easier.

Have you got ramekins? Could do them in those and not turn them out and just have aeroplane biscuits/brandy snaps etc with them?

Just make them in glasses and sprinkle grated chocolate on top in the shape.of a plane? Or brandy snaps like PP said. Cutting them won't work.

Honest to god OP buy some aluminium pudding basins - save yourself getting into a BIG HOT MESS Grin. Then afterwards you can make chocolate fondants and Delia's sticky toffee puddings Smile.

Problem is, Heman my kitchen is heaving with baking accoutrements and dh will make me move into the shed if I bring home any more Blush and I can't find anywhere that stocks them within 20 miles and I need them for Saturday. I just remembered I have some of my Nana's china in the attic so I'll see if I have enough matching cups.

I know what you mean Blush. They stack really neatly though OP Smile. Serving them in teacups sounds a fabulous idea though. On a matching saucer with a decoration sounds perfect though!

espresso cups are good for pannacotta....esp if you are going along with the themed biscuit option.

Make individual pannacottas in ramekins, (turn out onto plate,) and decorate the top with two mint leaves and a sultana/cherry half/polo mint in the centre to look like a propeller.

And/or buy small plastic planes from cake decorating shop? About 10-20p each?

Thanks all, I'm going to hope I have enough china cups for the panna cotta and make some biscuits with the airplane cutter. Remarkably more sensible than my ideas Blush
