Unpleasant Maris Piper potatoes

Just thrown away some mash because it was gluey rather than fluffy. In fact I have chucked out all the potatoes. They were Maris Pipers from Aldi. They looked good from the outside and it was only after I had made the mash it was apparent there was something wrong.
I have bought these before and they have been lovely.Anyone know what has happened to make the potatoes this way?

I've stopped buying Maris piper for this very reason too OP. I've read somewhere they go "gluey" when you over mash them, but I mashed them no differently to how I normally do - the only thing I personally noticed was that when I was peeling them the skin seemed thinner than usual.

Thanks for your reply...no I didn't over mash them. They didn't roast well either. I par boiled as usual, in fact longer than usual, but they didn't get fluffy edges so didn't become good roasties and tasted odd.
What do you use instead? King Edwards?

The same thing happened to me. I've stopped using Maris pipers.

I use regular white potatoes or baking potatoes and they're lovely and fluffy.

I only ever buy Maris Piper and they do vary a lot. I have concluded based on the fact of what I'm doing to them is the same, that the conditions their stored in (between being got out the ground and arriving on the supermarket shelf) is what alters their cooking outcome. If they have been stored too cold for instance they do go gluey and an odd colour. Trouble is you can't tell before cooking.

I buy Maris Piper, but only for roasting or wedges, I wouldn't use them for mash.

I've been buying the bog standard red ones from Waitrose (seem to be either Camel or Mozart varieties) - I get the 20% off with the Waitrose card -and I found them fine. If I see baking potatoes on offer I get those for roasting.
