Apple crumble help!!!

But I can never get my apple crumble right. It's either too watery, the apples are too hard, the crumble tastes off.

Can someone please give me a step by step guide on how to make a delicious apple crumble? Pretty please?

I always cook my apples first, till they've started to break down - not always a popular decision, but it's what my Mum did, therefore I do it too.

Crumble simply 4oz flour, 2oz sugar and 2oz marg.

Cook for approx 30 mins. Not the most fancy crumble, but I've not had any complaints!

I cook my apples too with some dark brown sugar for a toffee taste. When they're starting to break down I transfer them to the dish. Top with the crumble mix - then I sprinkle with dark chocolate chips.

I don't cook my apples first , otherwise they go into a mush (I use Bramleys )
I slice up the peeled apple into thick slices into my dish, sprinkle about a tablespoon of sugar on top and then pile as much crumble on top as possible :) I stand it on a pre heated oven tray and cook for about 30 -40 minutes at 180º I want the top to be brown, and it to be very slightly caramelised around the edges with apple and sugar stuff.
Crumble topping is basic Delias
110 gm plain flour
110 gm rolled oats
150 gm brown sugar
75 gm soft butter
1 level teaspoon baking powder.
put flour and baking powder into a large bowl, add the butter and rub into flour lightly. When nicely rubbed in, add sugar and mix.

i cook the apples 1st with loads of sugar and a bit of cinnamon, top with crumble which i make by using plain flour, half the weight in granulated sugar and half butter, sprinkle on top and bake till its golden.

I love my mum's crumble topping. So I usually do 6oz soft butter or marge, 6oz plain flour, 6oz Demerara sugar (makes it a bit crunchier) & 3oz rolled oats. Squish it all together and then dollop chunks all over the apple. Yummy hot and just as yummy cold for breakfast.

equal measures oats, flour, ground nuts, sugar, butter. some cinnamon & black pepper for some heat, pinch of salt.
apples: precook if using eating apples, don't precook cooking apples.

Choc chip bits sound good.

I always cook my chopped apples in a bit of sugar before putting them in the dish. Crumble topping has ground almonds, cinnamon and blitzed nuts in.

Thank you everyone! DH wanted a crumble for Christmas pudding and he will now be a happy camper. I've never used oats in a crumble so I guess I will have to make two batches and do a taste off!

Agree with the oats. I also grate a bit of nutmeg over the top before baking.

I use eating apples. Slice them into the dish you are going to use, add a dash of orange juice, cover with cling film and microwave for a few minutes. I also use Delia's topping but with a teaspoon of cinnamon.

Another fan of Delia's recipe here, I sprinkle a tbs of demarera over the top too for the crunch.

I also recommend a squeeze of golden syrup over the top of the apples before you put the crumble mix on top. It gives a toffee chewy bit to the corners when cooked.

Cook your apples and crumble topping seperately. If you put the crumble mixture on a flat baking sheet you get a much better crunchy topping and then put on top of the apples and finish in the oven for another 5 minutes
