Xmas cake in oven string's fallen off and lid's fallen off!

I put the cake in the oven 45 minutes ago (very late) and I wrapped a double layer of brown paper around the outside and tied it with string. I probably should have used different string but I used what I had but looks like the string has burnt and it has broken and fallen off and is creating a horrible smell.

Also the lid I made out of the paper was obviously too small as it's now fallen onto the cake.

I can't open the oven for ages can I?
Will the smell of the cooking string permeate the cake? And will it be burnt on one side as the protective paper around it is flapping open?
And the lid.....

Too late to help you now, but if it is a Christmas cake, full of dried fruit, you could certainly have opened the oven door to adjust things. The lid falling on to the top of the cake should not be an issue.
Was the string made of natural fibres or was it polypropylene or something similar? It should definitely be natural fibre.
