Soupmaker - do I need one and if so, which one?

Just thinking about asking for a soupmaker for Christmas. I like the sound of them. Are they worth it? If so, what model is the best and what should I look for?

IMO no. You need a pan and a stick blender. Otherwise the soupmaker will be used for a week and then sit on your counter, taking up room and looking at you reproachfully :)

It's a no from me. I just don't see the point. A good pan and a stick blender is really all you need.

You will be fine with a good sized pan (like a stock pot) and a stick blender. I sometimes use my Nutri Ninja to blend the soup - but find it less hassle to use the stick blender.

Make a big batch and freeze in portions - always have soup to hand that way.

I have a morphy Richards one . I use it prettt much weekly in the autumn / winter. But a stick blender would do just as well.

No, you need a pan and a stick blender. I always imagine soup blenders are for people who can't cook at all and think soup is complicated.

No def much easier to have a stick blender and wash up too!

I'm a super busy full time working mum ... i use mine all the time !!! Saves faff and it cooks and blends in 20 mins Fantastic!!!!!!

I bought one last year with good intentions, used it once and ended up with burnt veg stuck to the bottom of it so gave up using it and reverted to pan and jug blender.

Yup, agree with everyone else. Don't do it. Stockpot and a good stick blender. I got a soup maker a few years ago, tried it once, was a right faff. Much easier just to use the basic items.

FLump - how does it save time though? I could cook a soup in pan and be eating it in 20mins.

I don't even blend most soups.

Once you've made the soup, you can't just leave it in the soup maker, you have to decant it into a bloody pan anyway. So unless you're definitely going to serve up all the soup straight away, it's not going to save you any time in washing up.

Mine has a jug so I just chuck it in the fridge.
I'm debating an actifry but wondering if that's going to go the same way as every other gadget !

I've always made soup using a pan and stick blender, but now I've got a soup maker, it's in use all the time. The best thing about it is that you can just shove stuff in, saute the ingredients if they need it, and then leave it. No stirring, no checking, no need to blend. Just come back 21 minutes later and there's a whole jugful of really smooth soup. Bought mine on an Amazon warehouse deal at half price.

Oh and I can cook

My DH got me one on account of me making a lot of soup. It's at the back of the cupboard I use a big pot and a stick blender which is far easier.

I use mine twice a week. I'm on slimming world so I chuck veggies and stock in, 25 mins later I have 4 portions of fat free, syn free soup. I freeze it in portions. It's cheap and filling and a good way to use up veg. It's also set and forget, no watching pans. I can do something else at the same time

Yes you can use a pan and a stick blender, but you have to wash both. You also have to watch it so it doesn't burn.

I put water and fairy liquid in the soupmaker and switch it on and it's clean

I don't watch soup pans,just put them on low and set a timer.

If you use a dishwasher it's easier to put the pan and blender attachment in that than to clean a soup maker separately.

You only need it if you want another large piece of kitchen gadgetry cluttering up your cupboards.

Puts me in mind of a recent Facebook meme I've seen about cooking spaghetti, jar of pasta sauce and frozen meatballs in the slow cooker. For 4 hours! Hahahahaha.

I do soup in my slow cooker - that way I don't have to keep an eye on it, but it's not another gadget. I'm not clear how a soup maker would do anything different that the slow cooker and a stick blender combined can't do?
