Can decorate fairy cakes with buttercream without a bag?

Need to decorate 30 fairy cakes ASAP. I'm rubbish at piping and don't have a bag can I just just put on with a spoon or will it look rubbish? Advice needed so I don't let my kids down at school!

You could put it on with a pallet knife.
