Does anyone have a foolproof recipe for sweet and sour with pineapple?

Without using a ready made sauce? DS2 wants to cook one. I've made it before but not often and it's never been quite right. He wants to make it from scratch without a jar of sauce. One with pork or chicken would be ideal.

Thanks.

Pineapple juice from the tin with white wine vinegar, heat until gloopy. Add fried onion, veg and pineapple chunks and a bit of sweet chili sauce.

The hairy dieters one is lovely. Let me see if I can find a link to the recipe.

It's really easy too.

Recipe from my grandmother who is Chinese- boil water, add ketchup, sugar, white wine vinegar, pineapple juice from tin, add in the veg- onions, peppers, pineapple chunks. Test how it tastes- add more sugar/vinegar to your liking. Slowly add in cornflour to thicken. Simmer and stir constantly until thickened to the consistency you want

For the chicken or pork- cut into chunks and marinade in bowl with salt, pepper and soy sauce. Dip in whisked eggs then in flour. Stir fry or bake in the oven.

Way easier

3tbsp sugar
3tbsp white wine vinegar
1 tbsp soy sauce
1tbso ketchup
1tbsp cornflour
1tsp sesame oil
Juice from small can pineapple and touch more water if needed.

Chop onion and peppers into squares.
Cube chicken and coat in beaten egg then tossed in cornflour

Fry onion and chicken in more sesame oil.
Add peppers. Add sauce made in separate pan as above. Add pineppale.

Yum.

The sauce I mix the cornflour with the sugar dry then add the wet.

Dinner tonight sorted!

This is good. I add a chopped onion when cooking the peppers.

Oh, these are all brilliant. Thank you all so much. Will have a good read through. I've loved other Hairy Bikers recipes. And am very tempted to try one cooked by a Chinese grandmother!

1 table spoon soy sauce
2 table spoons sugar
3 table spoons white wine vinegar
4 table spoons tomato purée
200ml water.

Mix together. Stir fry any meat and veg (usually onions, peppers and water chestnuts or bamboo shoots)

Add the sauce and stir fry together. Once cooked add pineapple and serve!

Nursing student days it was a tin of pineapple plus half a jar of Branston's pickle!

notagiraffe · 23/10/2016 22:25

Sorry P0ppy - I'm not trying that one. Grin

Hairy bikers recipe is also a winner in this house. I use baby sweet corn instead of water chestnuts though.

notagiraffe · 24/10/2016 16:16

Join - baby corn is a good idea. DC not keen on water chestnuts.

This recipe by John Torode is spot on. There's no need to deep fry the chicken though - I add the sauce to stir fried chicken instead.
