Want to bake them in the morning and serve fresh to friends coming for elevenses but would be very helpful to make the dough tonight while the kids are in bed - can I do this and keep it in the fridge? Also i don;t have a cutter - can I just make them as lumps?

Maybe weigh out the dry & combine it, weigh out the wet in advance & mix in the morning. Roll out & cut with something that's roughly the size of the cutter you would use. Children's beaker/glass/mug/empty jar etc.

I never use a cutter, I shape the dough into two round shapes and cut each into six wedges, sort of triangular, rustic looking scones, but still delicious.

I use a glass as a scone cutter.
