What pudding to follow Toad in the Hole?

I normally only make puddings once a week, after Sunday lunch. However we have a rare Saturday night where all three DC are at home and we can take our time to have a nice meal together. DS1 has requested Toad in the Hole, so I am going to make that with mashed potato, cabbage and gravy. I'd like to make a pudding to follow, but as Toad in the Hole is so stodgy I'm stuck for ideas! I tend to make things like apple pie, pear and blackberry crumble, Eve's pudding, apple and blackberry cobbler etc at this time of year, but they all seem too full on after Toad in the Hole.

Any suggestions?

Rice pudding is the only possible choice!

I think you can go one of two ways - either embrace the stodge and make a lovely nursery pudding like steamed sponge or jam roly poly OR go the other direction with sown thing tart and refreshing like lemon sorbet or posset, passion fruit fool, caramelised oranges or the like.

Oh, so the absolute family favourite of bananas and custard probably is too simple for what you're looking for then..

I'd be quite happy with bananas and custard, but two of my three DC are strange don't like custard!

I'm liking the idea of rice pudding, totally embracing the stodge. Steamed sponge pudding too. I just might need an elasticated waitstband....

Possibly what I need to do is make the batter to sausage ratio less so that the main course isn't too filling, then crack on with a stodgy pudding. I don't have this angst about serving crumble after a roast beef dinner with yorkshires, roast potatoes etc, which is just as bad!

Personally I would max out the batter to sausage ratio and dump the mash. I never do another carb with toad in the hole because I love Yorkshire pudding so much and I can fit more in my tum without loads of potato to fill me up!

I never eat the mash with toad in the hole, but my hollow legged teens will moan if there isn't mash too!

Def embrace the stodge! We had toad in the hole this week and I made pineapple upside down cake and custard. My kids were asking what had happened and why was I being so nice!! Definitely a winner in their eyes

I'm sure teenagers must defy the laws of thermodynamic or something! I never understand how they can gobble down more than a normal adult could possibly contemplate eating and yet are all lithe and diaphanous.... Not fair!

how about cake instead? can have a little gap then!
Or to be sensible, favourites here are panna cotta and creme brulee

I'd go lemon meringue, pie like but meringue makes it a bit lighter.

As we have woken up to pouring rain, and as 2 DC have football matches to play in it today and 1 has a rugby match to play in it tomorrow, I decided we can afford to go stodgy. So today will be toad in the hole followed by apple an blackberry crumble, tomorrow's roast will be followed by bakewell tart. On Monday I will be mostly eating lettuce to make up for it!
