Have been asked to make stovies (not corned beef, real meat ones) for a friends party (approx 50 people) but have no idea where to start! Have tons of cooking Experience but have never done stovies. Pleaee help! She is scottish, I'm not, which might explain a little!

Generally potato, onion, sausage or mince. I don't think you can go wrong with that

AgentProvocateur · 20/07/2016 17:18

God, I want stovies now

1frenchfoodie · 20/07/2016 17:45

Thinly sliced potatoes and onions, layer up with sausages and add stock and seasoning then cover and cook til done - about 60-70 mins from memory, uncovering half way through. Can brown sausages first or the look a bit anemic. Worth a trial run before cooking for 50 though. Never had with mince but love the corned beef version.

GipsyDanger · 20/07/2016 17:58

Has to be square sausage though

lilydaisyrose · 20/07/2016 17:59

I like sliced (lorne) sausage in my stovies!

situatedknowledge · 20/07/2016 18:01

Omg you are all wrong! Are you west coast??? It should be left over roast beef!

GipsyDanger · 20/07/2016 18:01

East Coast! But West Coast mother!

1frenchfoodie · 20/07/2016 18:14

Yup, west

janethegirl2 · 20/07/2016 18:14

Must be left over roast beef or roast lamb, never mince Confused layered with onions and potatoes

Lessstressedhemum · 20/07/2016 18:21

Slice sausage, onions, potatoes and I always add carrots. Potatoes have to be the floury kind, do that they break down properly. Dripping and only enough water to stop the stuff sticking, salt and plenty of pepper. Stories are the food of the gods.

Lessstressedhemum · 20/07/2016 18:22

Stovies. Stupid autocorrect.

canihaveacoffeeplease · 20/07/2016 18:33

Ooh lots of options!! Well I have a couple of weeks so I'll do a couple of trial runs! It all sounds so good, the family will be eating well lol!

I'm from the east coast and only ever had stovies made with mince.

And I'm loving the mention of Burdalls Gravy Salt.

It's amazing how the smallest things can take you down memory lane and make you think of your mum.

OP, I had a family reunion about a month ago for about 45 people and Stovies was one of the dishes on the menu.
