Help - tomato sauce for meatballs too sweet

ridingsixwhitehorses · 18/06/2016 17:02

I think I added too much sugar. Any ideas to take the edge off the sweetness please. It has tinned tomatoes, sugar, herbs, chillies, red wine, tomato purée. And is to go with very garlicky pork meatballs.

Something acidic.... Squeeze of lemon/white wine vinegar?

DubiousCredentials · 18/06/2016 17:04

I would just leave it. I'm sure it will be fine and attempts to rescue it could ruin it in my experience! Why would you put sugar in tomato sauce anyway?

DubiousCredentials · 18/06/2016 17:04

Or make a fresh batch.

OurBlanche · 18/06/2016 17:05

Bit of red wine vinegar... more tomato puree

I usually go for the obvious and add lemon juice, but that's cos I always have a bottle of it in the fridge.

Salt.

Onions. But you usually start with onions to make a tomato sauce. Why do you add sugar?

randomsabreuse · 18/06/2016 17:09

Salty stuff - Worcester sauce, soy sauce or similar.

Balsamic vinegar and tinned tomatoes. Beaut!

Xmasbaby11 · 18/06/2016 17:11

Tomato sauces often have a teaspoon of sugar added to take the edge off the acidity of tomatoes.

I'd add something salty.

BurningGubbins · 18/06/2016 17:11

I second Worcestershire sauce.

I always put sugar in tomato sauces to cut the acidity. Try it, those who haven't heard of it!

Artandco · 18/06/2016 17:18

Sugar only needs to cut acidity if you are trying to speed cook it though. A tomato sauce cooked with time with naturally get rid of acidity

OurBlanche · 18/06/2016 17:20

But a bit of sugar makes the garlic so much garlickier....

Vinegar has worked a treat. Thanks
