I brought some taste the difference fishcakes from Sainsburys last week, put them in fridge.....forgot about them. Use by date was yesterday. Would you eat or bin?

I would eat them.

Use by dates are normally pretty conservative. Food doesn't just go from being fine to utterly dangerous at the stroke of midnight on the use by date. Obviously it is your call, but personally I would definitely eat them!

I'm just worried as it's fish! I assume fish food poisoning is the worst type of poisoning!

They will be fine ... I cook for a living if that helps

I've got a gammon joint with a use by date of 28 May. Think I need to throw it out but it feels a waste! Can I freeze it maybe??

Looly71 · 31/05/2016 17:52

No I would use gammon. It's very salty so gives you a bit more leeway.

Use the gammon. Honestly your nose will tell you when it's off

FawnDrench · 31/05/2016 19:08

I would use both the fish cakes and the gammon.

The fish cakes will probably contain other non-fish ingredients anyway.

They'll be fine (so long as your fridge is working at the correct temperature). They're only ?20 hours out of date. For a product that likely has a shelf life of around 1 week, 20 hours isn't very much. They build in a bit of a buffer when calculating the use by date; they don't suddenly turn minging at midnight on the use by date.

Just make sure they're thoroughly cooked all the way through - make sure oven is up to temperature before you put them in etc.

And the gammon will be fine too Smile
