they would be very very very dry if just oven baked I think, as they are pounded soaked, not boiled, chickpeas.
But I wait to be corrected

go to shop.
Buy
Eat.

i think most shop-bought ones are disgusting, tbh, too salty and weird tasting.
our lebanese caff does brilliant ones but it's a fair hike and i'd rather do them myself so i can keep them in the freezer.
i'm very scared of the whole frying thing as our kitchen isn't big and dd is forever getting underfoot, so oven-baked would be best.

you can fry in a wok or in any pan, jsut do it on the back burner and put teletubbies and a dish of cheese strings on in the other room

Honestly baked felafels unless laced with palm oil or lard would be disgustin'

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 07/01/2007 14:48

no to the frying, other than with a small amount of oil. ridiculous i know but dh was in a chip pan fire when young and is still traumatised by it, no kidding. so i wouldn't do it for his sake, he'd freak.

so that's about fifteen reasons not to deep fry, i now realise...

But I pan fry mine and they're OK. Must admit to using cooked chickpeas and quite a lot of onion and parsley so they're nice and moist. I got my recipe from a veggie recipes for kids book and adapted it taste wise from that. They're not pretty (no good at making balls) but they're perfectly edible.

Alternatively you can make kofte, which are similar (made from red lentils and bulghur wheat) but are cooked in the oven.

Let me know if you need either recipe and I'll dig them out when I have a mo'.

miao · 11/01/2007 12:57

Chick pea patties. Widespread in Middle East cuisine and v. nutritious.

ask tassis.....

tassis · 11/01/2007 14:55

i tried frying once and it was a disaster...think i them drove round to ja9's because she had a deep fat fryer and i really needed those falafels!

oh man, ja9, i'd forgotten that experience...
let's just say i'll not be trying them again!
