Portable, healthy and filling after school snacks please

DS is permanently 'starving' (and therefore grumpy) after school. The school run is about 20 minutes away and he generally plays in a local park after school so needs to be portable!

A banana, sandwich, cereal bar, etc

Mine eat a packet of crisps so not a healthy option!

ThoughtfulPenny · 10/03/2016 18:17

I normally take breadsticks and fruit

Malt loaf and a banana

Cleanandclothed · 10/03/2016 18:33

Malt loaf is a good idea. Bananas don't work as they get squashed in a bag and then he kicks off about them being bruised. 3 days a week it is an after school nanny that picks him up so sandwiches tricky as she would need to make them rather than just me hand them over the day before. Breadsticks we do but don't fill him up!

How about something like small samosas or mini pasties?

SweepTheHalls · 10/03/2016 18:37

Popcorn

dementedpixie · 10/03/2016 18:40

Ds takes his banana to school for his snack in a plastic banana guard and it stops it getting bruised

Cleanandclothed · 10/03/2016 18:48

Definitely trying popcorn! Yes to samosas as well. Brilliant thank you - any more?

bananaguards are good at protecting them!
baby bels/cheese cubes
apples and satsumas more transportable
peanut butter sandwich? (not ok to take to school but ok in park)
flapjacks - esp with seeds/fruit in
banana /oat muffins
oat n raisin cookies/granola bars
also samosa/pasties/sausage rolls (not from greggs ever Grin)
with ds do fruit first then protein/carb/sweet -

find some protein fills the hole better so have also done cocktail sausages/hard boiled egg/scotch egg /frankfurter./ pepperami..

am surprised after school nanny can't bring a snack of some sort lots of kids come out hungry

DS is always starving and he gets something like -

  • baked crisps, mini cheddars, grapes, popcorn, chocolate mini rolls, hot cross bun, scones, tea cakes, cheese, kit kats, homemade fairy cakes, mini doughnuts, oddities (baked savoury crackers), wagon wheels!
TinySombrero · 10/03/2016 18:58

A pack of oatcakes (four in a wee plastic pack) and cheese cubes goes down well with mine. Easier than a sandwich.

Do get a banana guard, Lakeland used to do one.

Will look into banana guards! Some great ideas here, thanks. Any recipes for oat muffins?

Nairns oatcake biscuits

madmotherof2 · 10/03/2016 20:48

DS2 is always half starved too. He likes babybels, chopped yellow pepper and cucumber, peperami, cheddars, grapes. Sometimes he will have crisps or a biscuit left in his lunch box
