Flour mites!

Have just discovered flour mites in my cupboard, help! I put two bags of flour in a tupperware box so have been tightly sealed and just looked in the box and its crawling with them! Searched internet and discovered you cant wash them away as they love damp areas. Cant understand how we are so infested as flour has been kept in sealed tub and not in damp area. Any suggestions on how to get rid of them and how to prevent this happening again?

I've found these in my flour a few times and just ignored them. They haven't killed me, or even caused any health problems, to date.
It's highly unlikely that they would survive the heat of cooking.
Perhaps they are a ploy to make us purchase a fresh supply of the product. Lol!

Had them when I bought some fancy flour from a mill.

I had an infestation of the nasty black ones brought in with a packet of tealeaves (a present from India). All food is now stored in airtight Kilner jars, or plastic tubs with lids. I still get the occasional one in the bottom of a drawer or at the back of a cupboard where they feed on crumbs or spilt foodstuff - despite being scrupulously tidy. I think they eat paper and glue from packaging too. I use vacuum cleaner then bleach.

They are harmless. More info here:

Are you sure they are flour mites ? Are they maybe grain mites ? Those are little white speckles that look like dust. I’ve been dealing with these mites for over 7 weeks now. All started from a bag of dog food. They are also in my cupboards and inside everything in my kitchen. Did you get rid of them ? If so give me an update please Smile

They come from inside the flour (eggs are already inside) which is why you have to store flour in a cool dry place (in India it often goes into it’s own dark cupboard with nothing else inside it) inside ‘sterilized’ steel containers. But it’s not the end of the world if you get mites or beevils - just sieve them out and then put them back into a sterilized jar. Lol sieves were designed to take insects out of flour.

This is a little late so not sure if anyone will see this but how long did it take for you to get rid of them? I found them in my dog treats in and they all came out and went everywhere, I’ve cleaned my whole kitchen and I’m now only seeing a few a day but I want to wait them out before putting anything back in my cupboards, how long did you all wait before they was completely gone please
