I want to do soup as a starter option on Xmas day - I have a case of tomato soup. Could I just add chopped toms and some basil?
croutons?
any other suggestions?

cream?

Adding some sundried tomato and basil might be nice.

Sherry?

Wouldn't cream of tomato soup be a bit heavy as a starter to a substantial meal? I must admit, we don't bother with a starter at all - I like to save room for trifle [dribble]!

But in answer to your question - a swirl of cream and a sprinkling of paprika would, I think, be a better addition. Heinz soup has a really strong flavour which I'm not sure would go well with basil.

PUt it in a cup and grate cheese on the top. A restaurant in Leeds (Indy Joe's if anyone remembers it!) used to do this and as students we used to pop in there while out shopping for a mug of soup and cheese!!

Ooooh, for a starter? Sorry - yep, cheese waaaay too much! Just a swirl of cream then.
