Newbie Slow Cooker Recipes

Inspired by MN I have just acquired my first slow cooker and am thouroughly excited! However as I have no experience actually using a slow cooker, I was hoping for some good newbie recipes from some of the slow cooker goddesses on here. Any tips and recipes will be gratefully received!

My simplest recipe is as follows:

Chicken thighs skinned and browned , put in the slow cooker with chopped onions and crushed garlic. Add a tin of tomatoes, a red wine stock pot thing and some basil.

Cook on low for about four hours. Delicious.

Just remember to add less liquid than for normal cooking as the food steams away under the lid.

I got a great cookbook from a charity shop but look online too.

Another great one is simply cooking a whole chicken instead of roasting.

I scrunch up silver foil balls and out in the bottom of the slow cooker then test the chicken on the balls breast downward. The foil means the chicken won't burn in the bottom of the pan. Then season as you wish, chick over some peri peri seasoning and cook on low for 6-8 hours. The meat falls off the carcass so no carving bore.

We have it with chips and veg or I've made a mini Xmas dinner in a tortilla wrap with the meat adding stuffing and bread sauce. Let everyone make their own wraps.

Seashell I am absolutely looking for actually recipes that are proven to work and good for a newbie to try out so am very grateful indeed for you contribution which, by the eay, looks delicious!

My best tried and tested recipe is a very rich beef casserole. Brown off your onions and garlic, throw on slow cooker, next brown off your beef (braising, skirt, whatever) and throw a tbsp of flour over it, add to slow cooker. Brown mushrooms in dry pan, until really brown and nutty, and throw in too. Next add a rich beef stockpot, a bottle of red wine, season, Worcestershire sauce and a bay leaf. It's absolutely to die for!! Serve with mash, tagliatelle or whole grain giant couscous and carrots cooked in orange juice and steamed greens! It's more if s dinner party one, or Sunday lunch, but it's amazing! Of course you don't have to do the browning stages, I just think the flavour is massively enhanced. Enjoy!
