you should be able to pull one of the leaves out of the top without difficulty.

If you try and pull out one of the central leaves on the top and it comes away easily then it is ripe (or so I was told by the lovely lady in the fruit and veg shop)

I always give them a squeeze, if they are spongyish they are usually ready t eat.
