How far in advance can I make soup and leave on hob?

Am making soup for 8 people tonight. Want to make it around now as have got time on my hands that I won't have later. The soup has double cream in it. Can I cook the big vat of it now and leave it on the hob with the lid on and then reheat this evening or would I have to put it in the fridge once it's cooled down?

Make it now, but don't add the cream (I imagine that the cream goes in last?). Then you can leave it out all day without any worries, and just add the cream once you've heated it for serving.
