bread from breadmaker is stodgy

How can i make sure my bread from the bread maker is nice and soft? it always comes out with a thick hard cryust(Even on lowest setting) and after i have sliced it it goes stodgy and filling.

omitt most of the sugar - sugar gives a nice thick crust!

Also try making the bread with milk rather than water, as this gives a soft texture.

agree your recipe sounds waaaaaay too complicated. i just use yeast, flour (half and half brown/white), salt, olive oil and water. french bread setting, unless i'm putting in seeds.
