And I'm buggered if I'm beating the mixture with a wooden spoon. But all I have is one of these - will the balloon whisk attachment be ok to beat the mixture?

It'll be fine, the only problem I had with those is that sometimes the mixture goes everywhere. I would recommend using a big bowl and/or covering the bowl with foil and then cut a hole in the foil and poking the blender through the hole.

For those of you who would rather the mix stayed in the bowl and didn't plate the kitchen, IKEA do a mixing bowl with a lid, and a smaller mixer-sized hole in the lid to reduce splatter. It's called Allehanda.
