Can you make a crumble with self raising flour? Someone has just donated us some rhubarb, but I only have SR flour

Yes I always use SR flour using the bero recipe.

Orangeanddemons · 03/08/2015 10:12

You don't get a sort of puffy crumble then?

I always us SR flour. No, it doesn't puff up unless you are adding egg.

Anna2710 · 03/08/2015 10:21

No it won't puff up. I like to leave the crumble topping in fridge for an hour or so once made before putting on top and cooking as I think it makes it crisper and crumblier.

Smcgettigan79 · 03/08/2015 10:22

Yes - no problem. I always cook the crumble separately and assemble just before serving so it doesn't go soggy - some people don't mind but I hate soggy crumble!

Crosbybeach · 03/08/2015 12:54

But the soggy bit is the best bit! Where it meets the hot filling and goes soggy and then there's crispy crumble on top. Otherwise it's just crispy, and that's Wrong.

You won't be able to tell the difference, I promise. Enjoy! Smile

Some people are so weird! Grin soggy crumble is rank! It's ok if it goes a little bit moist when you're eating it but soggy from the off - Yuck! I bet you eat your cereal slowly as well Crosby - I have to eat mine within 2 minutes!

I use half flour (either plain or SR ), half porridge oats and brown sugar- gives it a better texture and flavour :)

Furball · 03/08/2015 14:01

For nice crunchy crumble use Demorara sugar

BeautifulBatman · 03/08/2015 14:06

And crunched up weetabix.

Smcgettigan79 Hmmm, slow cereal...that's so good too. And I have to butter my toast while it's hot so it goes soggy too....
