What is beef base?

I've seen some American recipes calling for beef or chicken base. Sounds like stock, but looks like a paste? Can I get this in the UK? Is it like marmite?

Is it like those jelly stock things you can buy to dilute with water? Think they stock them with the stock powder in the supermarket.
