Alcohol degrees proof

What does 55 degrees mean?

I found some old bottles of Pimms in a family cellar, used them up today.

Modern Pimms is about 15% alcohol so when mixed 1:4 with lemonade and strawberries is no stronger than a weak beer.

But a couple of pints of this stuff left me feeling quite tired.

Assuming its British in origin, its about 30% ABV.
So, twice the concentration of modern Pimms Shock

Originally from requiring "100% proof" that spirits hadn't been watered down. Typical spirits at just over 57% ABV didn't ignite when mixed with gun powder (aprox 4/7). If it had been watered down, it ignited, and so was less than 100% proof!

Pimms can be lethal. Sounds as though yours is double strength!
