Using spreadsheets or lists to avoid food waste?

Does anyone do this, so things don't get forgotten before they go off? Tried paper lists but it's a nuisance remembering to writing it all down, and they get messy with crossings out. But if it's on the computer, it isn't beside the fridge. And should it be printed out for every change?

Are there any other systems people use to make sure food is used, rather than going straight from fridge or cupboard to bin?

I don't find lists helpful as it takes time and I'm the only person who bothers to update. Instead I go for physical rotation and check the fridge every couple of days and the cupboards every couple of months for things that need using up. I move anything near its best before date to the front to remind myself and (everyone else) that it's there and needs to be used.

I menu plan so only ever buy what I need and will use. So eg instead if buying a bag of carrots I will buy individual carrots as needed for specific recipes (which is cheaper anyway).

I was using the FoodPlanner app, but have recently switched to Paprika.
