Would it work to use 'bought' pre-cooked chicken in rice recipe?

I'm rubbish at cooking but determined to learn so am starting with quick & easy recipes.
I'm doing chicken rice tonight & recipe says to use chicken leftovers. I don't have these but am assuming it means chicken that's already been cooked & just heat up?
I've seen the pre-cooked chicken breasts in sainsburys so would it work to use that, heat it up, chop into pieces & add to rice? Or are the pre-cooked ones meant to be eaten cold? Would breast portions or pre-cooked slices be better? Thanks
