FGS why can't I make something as simple as Flapjacks?.....

Every time I attempt to make these they turn out awful. Not cooked properly inside but nearly burnt on top. And they taste rank, just of oats, nothing else.

Where am I going wrong?

Mine are always delish! I don't know why but they are.
Oven temp might be too high so they burn before they cook.

Are you using any particular recipe? I seem to remember that the Nigella one has a mistake in the ingredients, and it should be about 3 times the amount of golden syrup that's actually printed.

In case it is, here's the link for the corrections)

always bung in more butter and syrup than the recipe says (at least that's what I do) - then if they are too mushy, you can shove them in the fridge to make them harder!

I think flapjacks are actually quite difficult to get just right

I used the dinner lady recipe, I did actuallt add more goldeb syrup, not butter though. Book said 180 degrees at 25 mins, I did 150 for 20 mins but still caught on top and uncooked in middle.

I thought they were meant to be easy?! Will stick to fairy cakes fom now on

I use
150g marg
75g sugar
3 Tablespoons golden syrup
300g porridge oats.
Oven temp 170 degs.
I make cherry and almond ones,Mint choc chip, rum (flavouring)and raisin.
Melted choclate spread over the top is yummy too!

Can you use honey instead of golden syrup?

miao · 20/11/2006 17:09

Don't know about honey, but try using molasses. Much healthier in theory because molasses is fairly rich in iron and other minerals, but a bit of a marked taste. I like it and so does the rest of my family, but then they're probably used to it.
