What cake recipe to use if I want to put fondant icing over it?

I'm new to baking and I'm just trying to work out what kind of cake recipe to use if I want to ice it with fondant icing. Also, do I need to put something in between the cake and the fondant icing? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!! [:)]

Nigella has a recipe in domestic goddess, sturdier than your normal Victoria sponge to allow for lots of icing. It has buttermilk and I think is called just birthday cake. Think you can stick the icing on with a little apricot jam brushed into cake but not sure how necessary that is

I usually do a normal victoria sponge - then add a thin coating of buttercream to stick the fondant onto the cake.

Any standard sponge cake recipe will do, as long as it has some fat. (A fat-free sponge will not be strong enough.)

If the cake is domed, trim the dome off to give a flat surface. Coat the cake first with a thin layer of buttercream. Literally a thin layer, you want to still be able to see the cake through the layer. This is not to smooth the surface but to give the icing something to stick to.

You can put the icing directly on to the buttercreamed cake, or you can have a layer if marzipan first. In which case you would then brush the marxipan with cooled boiled water to make it sticky for the icing.
